Accessibility

This is the Accessibility Statement for the4 GDA website (ggda.ie).

1    Statement of Commitment

The GDA is fully committed to providing a service that the public can avail of and that treats everyone equitably. We will do our best to make sure that we take into account the needs of all abilities to provide an accessible service both on and offline.

The GDA is also committed to making its website accessible in accordance with EU regulations - S.I. No. 358/2020 - European Union (Accessibility of Websites and Mobile Applications of Public Sector Bodies) Regulations 2020.

2    Compliance Status

The native HTML content on ggda.ie is compliant with WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines. However, despite our best efforts to ensure accessibility across our website, some content hosted or embedded on this website, such as YouTube videos and PDF documents, may not fully conform to accessibility guidelines. Below is a brief description of known limitations.

Non-accessible content

Tables: Some tables on this website do not have correctly defined headers. This makes it harder for people using screen readers or voice recognition software to read the content on the site. ( WCAG guideline 1.3.1)

Images: Not all images on this website have photo or meta descriptions. If images do not have the correct descriptions then a user using assistive technologies will not learn the information conveyed in the image ( WCAG guidelines 1.1.1)

PDFs: Many documents are published as PDFs – which are less accessible than HTML pages for people using assistive technologies. Some of the issues with PDFs include:

This content is not an exhaustive list of non-accessible content.

3    Exempted Content

PDF documents that were published before 23 September 2018 are exempt from these guidelines except where it is related to a service that a member of the public has to use. Videos or audio published before 23 September 2020 are also exempt from these guidelines.

4    Preparation of This Accessibility Statement

This Accessibility Statement was published on 1 June 2026. User testing has been carried out on the ggda.ie website. We will continue to carry out testing on a regular basis.

5    Other Digital Content

The GDA develops video and audio content for use across various platforms. In keeping with accessibility standards, we provide closed captions (CC) for all pre-recorded video content, allowing users to toggle them on or off. Our captions are synchronised with the audio, accurately represent the spoken word, and include important non-speech sounds (e.g., [music], [doorbell]).

We do not rely solely on auto-generated captions; all captions are edited for accuracy to ensure they meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards

6    How we are going to improve accessibility on ggda.ie

  • We will work to make photo-descriptions mandatory on the website and carry out regular spot-checks on photos across all departments on a quarterly basis.
  • We will ensure our content uses high-contrast colours and avoid colour as the only means of depicting information.
  •  We will continue to develop more content directly onto HTML pages instead of less accessible formats like PDFs where possible.
  • We will develop short, easy-to-use guides directing users to accessibility plug-ins for PDFs.
  •  We will continue to embed use of plain English guidelines across all digital content and information shared with the public.
