An Croí
Overview
An Croí (The Heart) is a group of restored historic buildings on the Grangegorman campus. These include St. Laurence’s Church, Glassmanogue & Bradogue, and Rathdown House, all of which were originally part of the Richmond Asylum complex. These building were all were designed by W. Murray, nephew of renowned architect Francis Johnson.
St. Laurence’s Church was initially built to serve both the Catholic and Church of Ireland congregations, however when the Church of Ireland Church was built 1860, it functioned as the Roman Catholic church for the asylum. Today, it is a unique event space for the university and continues to host Mass every Thursday at lunchtime.
Glassmanogue and Bradogue served as infirmaries. Glassmanogue also was used for the Richmond War Hospital 1916-1919, providing care for soldiers suffering from ‘shell-shock’ during the first world war. After refurbishment in 2014, Glassmanogue became a modern gym facility, while Bradogue now houses administrative offices.
Constructed in 1866, Rathdown House was originally the female ward of the Richmond Asylum. It was fully restored and reopened in 2014 and now serves as TU Dublin’s Student Services Centre, supporting students across the university.
