In February, the Grangegorman Development Agency published the fourth edition of Joining Up the Dots – a socio-economic and demographic report on the Grangegorman area. JUTD4 is the latest chapter in the story of this dynamic Dublin neighbourhood and the people who live, learn, work and play here.
In our first JUTD4 snapshot, we look at the headlines of what Census 2022 and other data sources tell us about who is living in the Grangegorman Area. Population
- 6% increase in population in the area – an additional 3,175 people which brings the overall population of the area to 30,507 people.
- A higher growth rate than Dublin City as a whole which grew by 6.9%.
Age (focusing on the largest increases/decreases)
- Half of the population in the area are aged between 20 and 39 years
- 9% are under 15 years old
- 83% are in the ‘working age’ category
- 8% are aged over 65 years
- 30% increase in 10–14 year olds – now 3% of the area’s population
- 90% increase in 15-19 year olds – now 6% of the area’s population
- 24% increase in 20-24 year olds – now 11% of the area’s population
- 32% increase in 40-44 year olds – now 9% of the area’s population
- 24% increase in 45-49 year olds – now 6% of the area’s population
- 30% increase in 60-64 year olds – now 4% of the population
- 25% increase in 65-69 year olds – now 3% of the population
- 24% increase in 70-74 year olds – now 2% of the population
- 14% decrease in 0-4 year olds – now 3% of the area’s population
- 15% decrease in 25-29 year olds – now 13% of the population
Gender (focusing on the largest increases/decreases)
- 12% increase in female population of the area
- 11% increase in male population of the area
Females
- 31% increase in females 10-14
- 93% increase in females aged 15-19
- 37% increase in females aged 40-44
- 31% increase in females aged 60-64
- 21% decrease in females aged 0-4
- 14% decrease in females aged 25-29
- 19% decrease in females aged 75-79
Males
- 29% increase in males aged 10-14
- 86% increase in males aged 15-19
- 29% increase in males aged 40-44
- 28% increase in males aged 60-64
- 7% decrease in males aged 0-4
- 17% decrease in males aged 25-29
Citizenship
- The percentage of Irish citizens in the population of the area decreased from 63% to 53%.
- The percentage of UK citizens increased by 21%. They continue to make up 2% of the total population of the area.
- 36% of the total population of the area are non-Irish citizens.
- The percentage of Poles decreased by 38%. They now make up 2% of the total population of the area.
- The number of other European Union (EU) citizens increased by 10%. They continue to make up 15% of the total population of the area.
- The number of citizens from the rest of the world increased by 52%. They now make up 18% of the total population of the area.
- 11% of people did not give details of their citizenship in Census 2022 (up from 4% in 2016).
Ethnicity
- ‘White Irish’ account for 42% of the population of the area (down from 54% in 2016)
- ‘White Irish Traveller’ account for 0.2% of the population in the area (up from 0% in 2016)
- ‘Other White’ represent 18% of the population of the area (down from 24% in 2016)
- ‘Black/Black Irish’ are 2% of the area’s population (down from 3% in 2016)
- ‘Asian/Asian Irish’ are 7% of the area’s population (up from 6% in 2016)
- ‘Other’ remains at 5% of the area’s population.
- 26% of people did not state their ethnicity in Census 2022 (up from 9% in 2016)
- The Grangegorman area is becoming more diverse, with those identifying as ‘white’ decreasing from 78% to 60%
